As the layers were gradually removed, a topographical metaphor emerged from the grid of faint red lines: As water recedes and rises new patterns appear (like an archipelago) on the surface (not unlike Smithson's "Spiral Jetty"). Ultimately, I have Smithson and Ellsworth Kelly influences here, but it wasn't completely intentional, although I did look at Kelly's simple shapes to research asymmetry as a way to resolve squareness. Smithson was a "residue".
