The 3 Rs: Remove, Reintroduce, Remix

The primary purpose of cropping is to remove unsightly "errors", but if history is a guide, we typically reincorporate many of those artifacts. Some were never errors to begin with if they had aesthetic uses.

Early Kodak cameras produced artifacts at the edges (something since reintroduced in photo apps), and a round mask was placed in the camera to obscure them. Reintroducing something like this on a large scale would be another variation of Instagram, which creates a frustrating constraint for purely nostalgic reasons, and merged with attributes of social networking (Likes, Hashtags). The round-masked version of this photo is "marginally" interesting, but removes all the "junk", and essentially functions as a junk mat.
